How to Choose a Daycare in Portland or Gresham: 9 Things That Actually Matter

Touring a daycare is disorienting. Every center has bright walls, a mission statement, and a director who tells you the staff are like family. Ninety minutes of that and most parents leave with a folder of brochures and no way to tell the places apart.

The differences are real — they're just not visible in a lobby. Here are the nine that decide whether a placement works, and what to ask to surface each one. 1. Can they take your child now — and keep them for years?

Age range is the first filter, and it's the one parents underestimate. A center that starts at two years old means you're solving infant care separately, then switching your child to a new building and new adults right as they've settled. A center that stops at five means you're solving after-school care again in kindergarten.

Ask every center: What happens if I'm ten minutes late at pickup? What's the late fee, and at what point does it become a problem?

3. Do the hours match a real job?

A 9-to-3 program is not childcare for working parents — it's enrichment with a childcare label. Every Family Cares program runs Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, which covers a standard shift plus commute on both ends.

Ask every center: What are the actual doors-open and doors-locked times? Are there half-days or in-service closures I should know about?

4. Is your child genuinely welcome — or welcome with conditions?

This is where polite language does the most damage. Plenty of centers will say yes to a child with special needs and then call you three weeks later because it "isn't the right fit."
